What is a Midwife?

Why Choose an OGOA Midwife

Receiving care from an Ocean Gynecological and Obstetrical Associates midwife has many benefits, including increased satisfaction with quality of care, increased chances of having a positive start to breastfeeding, decreased risk of needing a cesarean or of preterm birth, and decreased infant mortality rates.

By forming a collaborative relationship with physicians and other health care professionals throughout New Jersey, the certified nurse midwives of OGOA are able to provide the best in personalized and comprehensive patient care in the state.

Our midwives offer a high-touch, low-tech approach to care and are equipped to address and offer consultations for a variety of conditions and issues, including:

  • Prenatal Care

Prenatal care, also known as antenatal care, is the care you receive from a midwife during pregnancy. It includes regular care visits that allow our midwives to treat you throughout the course of your pregnancy, with the goal of providing preventive healthcare to help manage and prevent problems.

  • Labor and Delivery

A midwife provides care based on the philosophy that pregnancy and childbirth are natural, normal, and healthy life events. A midwife supports pregnancy, labor and delivery with as little intervention as possible and is committed to helping you have the birthing experience you want. Midwives provide mothers with labor support techniques to keep her relaxed and focused throughout your birthing experience.

Our midwives collaborate and consult with obstetricians and other medical professionals to make sure all of her needs are met during delivery and birth, and if an unexpected emergency occurs, that the appropriate physicians are there to help.

  • Breastfeeding

For many women, breastfeeding takes time and patience. Both during pregnancy and after birth, a midwife can provide the information and support you need to start breastfeeding (if that is your plan). Your midwife will most likely encourage you and your baby to have skin-to-skin contact immediately after birth, which helps make breastfeeding easier. After birth, your midwife can help you find your own rhythm with nursing. A midwife can also track how you and your baby are doing with nursing during post-birth check-ups and help you make changes if needed.

As you begin breastfeeding, a midwife is the ideal professionals to answer your questions. Sometimes difficulties, like infection or sore nipples, can occur while nursing: a midwife can answer any questions or concerns that you have and can guide you as you adjust to breastfeeding.
